Mind the Gap is an academic study undertaken by Simon in 2016-17, exploring reasons for boys' underachievement in literacy. The paper also suggests steps that can be taken to close the attainment gap.

The paper was published by the University of Cumbria in 2017, and was awarded the Critical Writing Prize. Simon donated the full proceeds of the prize to the School of Education library at the University of the West of Scotland. He extends his thanks to his academic sponsor, Dr. Anne Pirrie.
